Innovatively Changing
The Fate of Homeless Dogs

As Einstein once said: “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Although we have spent years helping homeless dogs find homes, we recognize that a new, pragmatic approach is needed to change the perception of homelessness.

Drawing on the knowledge and experience we have gained, we have decided to implement innovative methods to truly change the fate of our canine friends.

The Dog Campus is a project implemented through the joint commitment of the Drugi Dom Foundation, the City of Wrocław, and the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław. By collaborating at the intersection of local government, non-governmental organizations, and academia, we believe we can introduce innovative solutions that will change the perception of the problem of dog homelessness.

The project has been met with enthusiastic reception and broad support. In October 2023, the Founding Declaration was signed, with support also declared by representatives of the Wrocław Consular Corps, the Mayor of Wrocław, and the Director of the Office of the European Parliament in Poland. This has laid a solid foundation for further cooperation and the development of this initiative.

Through collaboration withwith scientists from various countries, we are developing proven methods for dog socialization that could become a model to follow across Europe. True to the spirit of a real campus, it will host students and doctoral candidates from different parts of the world, who will serve as companions to our canine residents.

As part of this unique collaboration, young researchers will support dogs in the socialization process, developing methods that could revolutionize the approach to caring for homeless animals.

Our goal is to create a catalog of best practices – practical guidelines and recommendations that will enhance adoption effectiveness and change the way animal adoption is perceived.

Our initiative aims to demonstrate the strength and value of international cooperation. Thanks to the involvement of the University of Environment and Life Sciences in Wroclaw and volunteers from various universities in EU countries, we are striving not only to pragmatically save the lives of our canine companions, but also to build connections and create a space for promoting European community values.

The campus is being built on a nearly 2-hectare plot of land leased to the Second Home Foundation by the City of Wrocław. The design phase is complete, and in a year, the first cottages will be ready to welcome our canine residents. In the meantime, we invite you to explore the visualizations to see what this unique place will look like.

Stories of hope

I am proud that Wrocław, as an open city that cares about the well-being of all its residents – including the four-legged ones – is one of the organizers of the Dog Campus. Through collaboration with the Second Home Foundation and the University of Environmental and Life Sciences, we believe that the Campus will become a model to follow in Poland and across Europe. This will be a place that transforms not only the fate of dogs but also societal awareness about responsibility and care for animals.
